I am working too many hours IN the business and not enough ON the business.

What is the problem?

This typically comes down to one of a few factors;

You feel guilty not treating patients as this adds significant revenue to the business and you are not clear on how you can add similar value doing “offic work”
Lack of clarity in HOW to spend the time on the business
Not having sufficient systems in place to ensure that business can operate without you physically being there.

What is the right number of hours to work ON and IN the business.

This is not a one size fits all answer but the minimum you should be working ON the business is 1 day. This should not include admin.

Ideally the most successful clinics we work with have owners/principles that work less that 2 days clinical and their remaining time ON or better still OUT of the business.

Firstly, the key is making sure that you know the tasks that need to be done when working on the business. Having this clarity, often allows business owners to give up some of their clinical work. This comes from an understanding of what to do and the impact that this work can have on the team and business performance.
